When Your Body Already Knows What Your Mind Has Been Arguing About
What’s interesting is we consider words as the only form of language, whereas we learned how to communicate long before we started talking, just based on the body. Every single situation that we go into, and relationships we enter, our body revives that information and responds to it first. For our brain, it receives information through sensations and movement first. This body mind connection is happening every second, whether we notice it or not.
Listening to Your Body for Better Mental Health
However, often when we are disconnected, the mind goes into overdrive when our thoughts turn into beliefs, and beliefs are seen as facts, and facts turn into action — an action formed through repeated exposure and submission to thoughts. This often also leads to impulsive decisions, wrong decisions, or decisions that may seem positive in the beginning but can often be unrealistic, with us only realizing it later when the mood has gone back to neutrality.
However, your body is quietly, and sometimes loudly, sending you messages to help you build deeper somatic awareness. You must have heard that quote, “be where your feet are,” which translates to being in the present. The present holds information. The sudden collapse when you are around someone negative, the sudden urge to connect because you felt safe while looking into their eyes, a hesitation in walking towards a choice, and a certain certainty.
Similarly, our sensory information also gives us that data.
But the thing is, when we are only driven by the body, it might so happen that you might be reacting to the past. Just like the mind, the body can be deceiving too. However, when they are together, when the mind labels what is happening in your entire body, it all comes together.
A Somatic Practice for Decision Making
Next time when you are to make a decision, notice how your body is responding now. This simple check-in is a foundational tool used in somatic therapy india to find clarity when your thoughts are racing.
Try to label your experience:
- Thought: What is the mental narrative? (e.g., I am thinking that I will fail)
- Emotion: What is the feeling? (e.g., I am feeling intense fear)
- Movement: What does it want to do? (e.g., I feel like resting my feet or getting up)
- Body Sensation: What is the physical feeling? (e.g., tension, heaviness, lightness, smooth, rough, etc.)
- Grounding: What can you see around you that brings you back to the present room? (e.g., a table, a chair, a plant, etc.)
And let that description stay with you. Don’t do anything, just stay with it. See what insights come in.
